Why engage in Monitoring & Evaluation in Peacebuilding?

  1. The very nature of conflict means that the time-scale for evaluating change is measured in years and decades rather than days and months. This means it requires rigorous engagement in M & E.
  2. Peacebuilding work often takes place in dynamic contexts. M & E provides key insights into what changed and therefore what needs to change in the programming.
  3. Peacebuilding work is qualitative in nature, it therefore requires innovative tools to measure success
  4. Without M & E, it becomes difficult to isolate the impact or outcomes of specific interventions from the complex political, economic and social contexts in which peacebuilding activities take place
  5. The peacebuilding practice is unique in that the world over, there is no universal way of building peace or transforming conflicts. M & E provides the opportunity to learn from our practice and to improve on it.
